Project Sponsor

The project sponsor is responsible for the outcomes of the project and the achievement of its objectives, within the agreed budget and time-frame. The project sponsor is always an actual individual person from the core organization.

Responsibility

  • Initiating and steering the project
  • Overall responsibility for the project and the achievement of its objectives
  • Alignment of project objectives with higher-level strategies, requirements, and goals of the core organization
  • Provision of resources (financial, human, and infrastructure) and ensuring that they are used efficiently
  • Early decisions about requests to be made and measures to be taken
  • Appointment of steering committee members and chairing the steering committee
  • Appointment of project manager
  • Ensuring sufficient participation by subject area specialists

Authority

  • Decision-making authority within the decision-making structure of the core organization
  • Allocation of financial, human, and infrastructure resources to the project
  • Escalation to the core organization

Skills

  • Business acumen and knowledge of subject area
  • Knowledge of core organization requirements for the project and the operation (e.g. for procurement, financing, controlling, and safety)
  • Knowledge of business administration to ensure the efficient and effective use of financial and human resources
  • In-depth knowledge of project initiation and project steering
  • Knowledge of HERMES, attested by completing a HERMES course
  • Communication skills to represent the project internally and externally, manage stakeholders, and resolve conflicts
  • Decisiveness and assertiveness
